Microsoft Forms Healthcare AI Network to Promote Responsible AI Practices

Microsoft has announced the formation of a new healthcare artificial intelligence (AI) network, the Trustworthy & Responsible AI Network (TRAIN), in collaboration with major health systems across the US. This initiative aims to establish best practices and promote responsible implementation of AI in healthcare settings.

TRAIN brings together 16 founding members, including renowned institutions like Providence, Mass General Brigham, and AdventHealth. Notably absent are tech giants like Google and federal government representatives, unlike another health AI standards network, the Coalition for Health AI (CHAI), in which Microsoft also participates.

The network's focus lies on the practical implementation of responsible AI principles. Members will share best practices, register AI used in clinical care, develop tools to measure AI outcomes and contribute to a national AI outcomes registry. Importantly, member organizations will not share proprietary data or algorithms.

TRAIN builds upon the existing work of CHAI, which boasts over 1,300 members and includes organizations like Google and hospitals participating in both networks. "TRAIN plans to leverage CHAI's established guidelines to create practical tools that make responsible AI a reality," stated Michael Pencina, chief data scientist for Duke Health and a CHAI leader.

This announcement comes amidst growing calls for federal regulation of AI in healthcare. While President Biden established a task force to develop a governing plan last year, concrete measures remain elusive. Microsoft's proactive approach positions them as a leader in the healthcare AI race, particularly following their acquisition of Nuance, a leader in AI-powered clinical note-taking software.

With the addition of Stanford Health Care and WellSpan to Nuance's customer base, the company's reach now exceeds 200 healthcare organizations. Microsoft's partnership with Epic, the leading EHR vendor, on generative AI tools further strengthens its position in the healthcare AI landscape.
